Funky Monkeys Bilingual Pre-School on Mojacar Playa is now open from
09:00 – 18:00 Monday to Friday

On the 1st of October Funky Monkeys will celebrate their first year anniversary in their seafront premises on Mojacar Playa. Special offers will be available during this month. In addition to new opening hours Funky Monkeys is pleased to now be able to provide children with outdoor play facilities. A children’s play park on the seafront terrace complete with play house, swings, slides and trikes will allow children essential outdoor play time. The play park is safe and secure with high fencing, video intercom system and staff supervision at all times.

• Structured educational sessions for children up to 6 years of age, with activities, songs and stories in both English and Spanish.
• Pre-School sessions are flexible with a choice between half or full days. Daily, weekly and monthly rates are on offer.
• Full time places are available with rates from as little as 1.65€ per hour and siblings are discounted at half price.
• Native Spanish and English Qualified School Teachers, in addition to UK Childcare Qualified Staff (Nursery Nurses). Also music and movement session with Qualified Music Teacher.
• Following the UK National Curriculum for the Foundation Stage of essential pre-reading, pre-writing and early mathematical skills. Using the same work books and teaching materials as UK primary schools.
• Organised daily routine to include music, story time and arts and crafts in addition to educational activities and outdoor play.
• Visits and settling in sessions available, please enquire about our mummy helpers program.

Funky Monkeys also offers recreational activities during the afternoon, evening and weekends for kids either living in the area or visiting.

Activities include: Saturday morning arts & crafts workshops, after school club, story telling & library, themed birthday parties, and an evening babysitting service (cinema and tuck shop). Please enquire for Activity Centre opening times & rates.

Bilingual Pre-School helps to prepare children for School, in terms of language development with Bilingual activities, but also by aiding their social development, both of which should help provide a smooth transition into School. The Child Carers supervising your children during Pre-School have been selected due their experience and understanding of this age group. Child Carers are mature, highly qualified and have had many years experience working with children since qualifying. Assistants Mandy and Irma are both mothers of young children.

Annie, the Pre-School & Activity Centre Manager, is an English Qualified Nursery Nurse & Play Therapist with over 10 years experience of working with children since Qualifying. Over the last 10 years Annie has worked with all age groups in Nurseries, Schools and Hospitals. Annie was also a Childrens Representative for Thomson Holidays running Kids Clubs in Spain & Greece. Annie is currently studying T.E.F.L Teaching English as a Foreign Language (Children) and is soon to gain her Diploma. Prior to moving to Mojacar Annie worked as a Play Therapist on a Childrens Ward in a London Hospital for four years. During the summer months Annie is a First Aid Volunteer, working at Cruz Roja (Red Cross Centre) on Mojacar Playa. Annie has lived in Mojacar and provided Childcare Services for the last four years.

Irma is a Spanish Native and has many years experience of teaching music to groups of children. Irma is also a mother to a 6 year old son. Irma’s music sessions are fun & energetic. Based on music & movement including plenty of singing, dancing and musical instruments. Sessions wind down with relaxation music and are followed by Storytime (a selection of childrens Spanish story books read by Irma.)

Mandy is an English qualified & experienced Social Worker with four children of her own (the youngest aged 2). Mandy has many years experience of working with children in lots of different settings, including nurseries and running an after school club. Mandy is also Childcare Qualified and a Registered Childminder.

Sessiones en las que los peques podrán jugar libremente, disfrutarán de actividades conjuntas, creativas, cuentos y hermosas canciones infantiles. Todo esto en español y inglés (colores, números, etc.). Muchísimos juguetes para disfrutar y explorar, entre ellos, sets de trenes, duplos, triciclos, etc...

El grupo de juego bilingue ayuda a preparar a niños para el colegio, en terminos de exposicion de idioma con actividades bilingues, pero tambien asistiendo a su desarrollo social, los cuales deberian proporcionar una transicion al colegio mas sencilla. Los responsables supervisan a su hijo durante el Pre-School. Las ayudantes Mandy y Irma son ambas madres de niños.

Reading and writing activities. Storytelling and Library.

Storytelling Sessions
Children are invited to story time sessions, where they will be able to enjoy a selection of old and new favourites read by a Qualified English Teacher (T.E.F.L) Diploma. Sessions include reading and writing activities and games.

Library

Over 500 children's books to choose from!!

To become a member please fill out a Library registration form and make a payment of 20 euros. A returnable deposit of 20 euros is required, this will be refunded providing all books borrowed are returned and have not been damaged. Membership can be put in the family name so that brothers and sisters may also use the facility. Up to 5 books per membership may be borrowed per week.

Membership is for 6 months, when membership expires either choose to renew for another 6 months or have the deposit refunded.

If requested, membership may be terminated at any time before the 6 month expiry date and the deposit returned. This may be an option if families decide to relocate, for example.

Please visit during library opening hours (Wednesdays 18:00 till 19:30) in order to join, browse, borrow and return books.

Jay is a qualified Dance Teacher with many years experience as a choreographer and teacher of dance. He is a father of a 2 year old son and owner of Rancho Luz del Sol (horse riding stables). Jay will be giving weekly dance classes teaching boy band and girl band dance routines in addition to choreographing upcoming stage productions.

Annie, owner of Funky Monkeys is a professional face painter and make up artist with experience in local theatre productions and charity events. Annie will be in charge of hair, make up and wardrobe in upcoming stage productions.

Mandy, Deputy Manager of Funky Monkeys. In addition to childcare has an extensive amateur dramatics background with qualifications in performing arts. Mandy will be the drama coach for upcoming productions.

Themed Parties for Kids at Funky Monkeys Activity Centre

Organised & supervised by Annie, a professional face painter & make up artist.

All parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include use of the Activity Centre, organisation & supervision, snacks & drinks, decorations & music, also all materials (cosmetics, jewellery etc)

Makeover Party
Enjoy a manicure, pedicure, facial & makeover while sipping champagne and nibbling canapés!

Beauty Parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include the following:

• Party ware / decorations / music - you choose the colour, theme, music etc.
• Champagne & Canapés (Childrens Champagne, Schloer Soft Drink, Cadbury Chocolate Fingers, Twiglets etc) presented on silver platters with imitation glass champagne flutes.
• Beautifying creams, lotions & potions! As well as hair, nail & cosmetic products.

A separate room in the Activity Centre is used for the party and can be decorated as desired. Arrange a meeting with Annie prior to the party to discuss your requirements.

Jewellery Party
Invite your guests & get creative! Use Floam, Fimo and a huge assortment of beautiful beads to design your own fabulous jewellery!

Jewellery Parties are held on Saturday afternoons, last 3 hours and include the following:

• Party Ware / Decorations / Music - you choose the colour, theme, music etc.
• Drinks & nibbles. Soft drink of choice, savoury & sweet snacks (crisps, chocolate) etc
• All craft & jewellery materials (modelling materials, beads, metal clasps, key rings, & earrings) etc

Pop Star Party
Have a funky makeover with your mates (hair colour, make up etc), practise your tunes & moves then perform your dazzling show with karaoke machine, microphone, lights, smoke machine etc.

• A recording will be filmed and each pop star will be given a copy on disk.
• Includes drinks & snacks, decorations, makeover, music equipment, recording & disk per child.

Parties need to be booked plenty of time in advance.
The themed parties are not suitable for children under the age of 5.

Funky Monkeys Bilingual Pre-School – Parent Information

If you would like your child to attend Funky Monkeys Bilingual Pre-School please read the following information as your full cooperation is necessary in the following areas:

Bilingual Pre-School helps to prepare children for School, in terms of language exposure with Bilingual activities, but also by aiding their social development, both of which should help provide a smooth transition into School. Parents following this information will ensure that Pre-School continues to be well run and organised, allowing their child’s time at Pre-School to be of maximum benefit.

Snack and Drink
If your child requires, please bring a basic snack. Please also bring a drink container (beaker, bottle etc) for your child, water is provided.

Toileting
Please bring a nappy and a spare change of clothes, wipes are provided. Precious clothing is not advised, please put your child in clothing that is suitable for messy activities and fun! Funky Monkey embroidered t-shirts are available at 5€. Changing mat, potty, Kandoo wipes, step and toilet training sticker charts are available. Nappies will be changed between 11:30 and 12:00 and at any time if the nappy is soiled. Children will be encouraged to use the toilet and wash their hands prior to Snack Time.

Behaviour
As parents you will be more than aware of the type of behaviour that you can expect from this age group. Toddlers are becoming more able and, as a result have an intense curiosity to explore, however the language side hasn’t quite caught up and extreme frustration can occur when they want to do something, but do not have the vocabulary as yet to articulate themselves. This can result in the famous Temper Tantrum! The Child Carers at Pre-School are experienced to deal with this type of situation and have also been chosen due to their gentle and understanding capabilities when dealing with children.

We will work as a team to provide a consistent approach in our caring. We will never shout at the children or punish them. If a temper tantrum does occur a child will be given supervised space to vent their frustrations then comforted, Carers will try to help them explore their feelings and express themselves.

Similar to temper tantrums frustrated toddlers, as many parents have experienced, do occasionally bite, this is an unlikely situation at Pre-School as Carers anticipate such behaviour of this age group and children are closely supervised. We will endeavour to prevent this from happening as we want children to feel safe and happy. If a biting situation does occur it will be dealt with firmly with involvement from parents. If a child bites more than once it may be that they are not yet ready to participate in Pre-School and will have the opportunity of attending again when they are a little older.

Carers will always treat your child kindly and respectfully, it is our aim to bring out the best in your child. Children will not be forced to participate but, in order for your child to gain maximum benefit from attending Pre-School they will be firmly encouraged to participate with the Pre-School routine and activities, your support with this and behaviour issues will be much appreciated.

Separation
This can be as difficult for the parent as it is for the child, especially if it is a new experience. Again, a consistent approach is the best way in order to help your child settle. The more drawn out separation is, the more difficult it can be when the parent leaves. If a child remains upset after being dropped off, parents will be contacted. A settling in programme is available; please speak to Annie for advice.

Bilingualism
Many of the studies and advice on bilingualism stress consistency. Children have an enormous capacity for learning, provided opportunities are presented clearly and consistently. The Pre-School routine has been organised to accommodate this approach. Languages are kept separate with Carers keeping to usage of their own Native language.

The first half of the Pre-School session will consist of activities, songs and stories in Spanish. The second half of the Pre-School session will consist of activities, songs, and stories in English. It is very important for an English child to keep up their English skills, as this will provide a good base for them to learn Spanish, and often parents find that living in Spain affects their child’s standard of English. Therefore, in order to gain maximum bilingual benefits it is recommended that children participate in the full 5 and a half hour session.

Registration and Booking
Please phone Annie to book a visit and to arrange settling in sessions, if they are required. It is necessary to complete a child registration form prior to child’s first session, this form can be completed online or can be filled in at a visit. Once registered you can check availability with Annie and book sessions.

To secure your child’s place at a Pre-School session it is necessary to book by telephone.

Places are limited so it is advisable to book plenty of time in advance.

These are the guidelines to our average daily routine, it is not timed strictly to the minute! And is flexible as we adapt to the children and their needs. Pre-School sessions always include plenty of play, colouring, singing, dancing and storytelling. But during the session we occasionally need to implement these activities at different times as indicated on the routine.

Circle time.
Introduction of all children with the hello song. During circle time the children practice the days of the week & the weather; also colours and numbers etc.

Disruption
Times for arrival and collection of children are to be kept to the times stated and be made brief. This is to cause as little disruption to the children and the activities as possible. As a safety measure at 10:00 the door to the premises will be locked. Activities will have commenced and staff will not be able to leave children unsupervised to attend to latecomers, therefore latecomers will wait outside with their child until it is convenient to sign them in.

Reminder

• Cause minimal disruption to children and activities by being punctual and keeping arrival and departure as brief as possible.
• Bring a bag containing a nappy, change of clothes, a snack and a drink container.
• Please bring your child prepared (fed, watered & rested) so that they can put all their energies into enjoying a fun filled session.
• Dress you child in clothes suitable for Pre-School.
• Do not bring your child if they are unwell.
• Please make Child Carers aware if your child is toilet training.
• Payment for a Full Session is to be made at the start of the morning session when signing in.
• Payment for a Morning Session is to be made at the end of the morning session (12:00).
• If a child booked in for a Morning Session is collected at later than 12:00 they will be charged at Full Session price.
